Center for the Study of the Cultural Heritage of Cyril and Methodius

The Center for the Study of the Cultural Heritage of Cyril and Methodius was founded in June of 2011 by the late Antonios-Aimilios Tachiaos, Professor of the Faculty of Theology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The establishment of this Center was dictated by the need to promote research into the life and work of SS Cyril and Methodius both in Greece and abroad. The absence of such a Center in Greece, until recently, gave the impression that the oeuvre of these two great figures, who are deeply honored by the entire Slavic and European world –in as much as thousands of studies and books (numbering more than 12.000) have been written internationally about them– was not sufficiently known in Greece.

The Center has a purely scientific character and provides for collaboration with other academic institutions of both Greece and abroad. Its main objectives include drawing attention to the cultural influence of Hellenism among Slavic peoples, promoting spiritual, cultural and ecclesiastical relations between the Greek and Slavic worlds, as well as the study of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Art and its expressions in the regions influenced by the activities of SS Cyril and Methodius. Certainly, the publication of books, both academic and popular, dealing with the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Greek world throughout the Slavic lands is yet another goal of the Center.

One of the first publications of the Center is the republication of the annual journal Cyrillomethodianum, which brought Hellenic Slavic Studies to the fore of international research in the field. All volumes are already freely available digitally. In Cyrillomethodianum the studies of Greek and foreign scholars are published, including book reviews and presentations. Through the exchange of Cyrillomethodianum with other Journals from abroad, the Center’s collaborators are afforded the opportunity to remain up-to-date with respect to on-going relative research in Slavic and other countries. The editorial board of Cyrillomethodianum is made up of distinguished scholars from Greece, the USA, Russia, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Serbia, Slovakia, Poland and Bulgaria.

Through the activities of the Center for the Study of the Cultural Heritage of Cyril and Methodius, Greece, in general, and Thessaloniki, in particular, is promoted as an international hub for the study of Greco-Slavic cultural and spiritual relations.

The Center is also a member of the international network Pax Byzantino-Slava.
